For maximum results, the tape path should be cleaned every 5 hours
of use (or so). This means that you should probably clean the heads of
all the recorders you will be using every time you start your studio
session.
Use only methyl-hydrate (99%) and cotton tipped swabs supplied in the
studio, or those that do not use glue to hold the cotton swab onto the
stick.
· dip the swab in the alcohol and squeeze off excess.
· clean all tape guides and heads with a horizontal motion;
the same direction as the tape moves over the heads.
· Use a dry swab to gently dry the path before threading tape;
this removes any residues, film and excess cleaning liquid.
Tape Path Demagnitization
The tape path should also be demagnetized occasionally. Students need
not concern themselves with this proceedure, as the Studio Technician
does this each week. For your information, this is the method for demagnitizing
tape recorders.
Before using the tape head demagnetizer,
· remove all reels of tape from the area
· turn all the tape machines OFF.
· Plug in the demagnetizer.
Holding the demagnitizer away from all machinery, engage the on switch
and very slowly bring the red tip extremely near all metal parts and heads
in the tape path with the exception of the erase head.
Move it horizontally a few times past all metal parts, again
only in the direction of the tape path
Slowly remove the demagnetizer to at least one meter away from all
machines.
Only then can you turn off and unplug the demagnitizer.
