Hélène Gagné won first prize at both the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation's National Young Performers' Competition and at the Concours artistique international de Paris. She received a Licence de Concert degree from the Conservatoire de Lausanne and was awarded a Fellowship by the Marlboro Music Festival, where she worked with Pablo Casals. She also worked with Paul Tortelier, and later studied string pedagogy in London with Helen Airoff Dowling. 
Hélène Gagné has performed extensively in France, Switzerland, the U.K., Yugoslavia, Tunisia, Japan, the U.S. and Canada. She has appeared as guest soloist with the Lausanne Chamber Orchestra, Belgrade Philharmonic, Polish Radio Chamber Orchestra and Tunis Symphony, and with several orchestras in the U.S. and Canada. She has recorded for SNE, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation and Société Radio-Canada, Radio Suisse-Romande, Belgrade Radio, the British Broadcasting Corporation and National Public Radio in the U.S.
   
Hélène Gagné has taught cello, chamber music, orchestral sectionals and string seminars at the Lake MacDonald Music Centre (Chamber Music Coordinator 1990-2000), Suzuki Institutes in Montreal and Edmonton, the International Festival of Youth Orchestras in Aberdeen (Scotland), Concordia University (Graduate Program Director 2002-2005), McGill University and the Université de Montréal. She also has given master classes in cello performance at the Conservatoire de musique du Québec and at the First International Cello Festival in Kobe, Japan.
