Daniel Bolshoy has performed in every major centre in Canada, establishing him as the country's most visible concert guitarist. He is regularly praised for his friendly and informative spoken introductions, and progressive programming of solo and chamber music. He is committed to bringing the guitar to the attention of audiences everywhere, from prestigious international concert stages to remote villages and house-concerts.
Mr. Bolshoy has performed for many prestigious festivals including the Halifax Guitar Festival, the Indian River Music Festival, the Guelph Spring Festival, the Westben Arts Festival, the Festival des arts Boré-Art, the International Music Festival in Macao, the Ottawa and the Vancouver International Chamber Music Festivals. He has toured under the auspices of Prairie Debut, Debut Atlantic, Jeunesses Musicales du Canada and Musique Royale; and has performed for the Début Series in Montreal and Vancouver and for the CBC/NAC Début series in Ottawa. Concerts in the United States include a tour for Live on Stage and numerous appearances at music festivals and universities.
Mr. Bolshoy's recitals are frequently broadcast on CBC Radio, and he has also appeared in two documentary films for the Bravo! (TV) series: The Classical Now.
Among recent orchestral appearances are concertos by Rodrigo, Ponce, Kernis, and Castelnuovo-Tedesco with international orchestras: The Mexico City Philharmonic, The Volgograd Symphony Orchestra (Russia), the Beer Sheva Symphony (Israel), the New Mexico Symphony (United States). In Canada, he has performed with most of the leading orchestras, including: The Toronto Symphony Orchestra, the Toronto Philharmonia, the Edmonton Symphony, the Calgary Philharmonic, The New Brunswick Symphony Orchestra, The Kamloops Symphony, the Vancouver Philharmonic, the Peterborough Symphony, the Huntsville festival, the Red Deer Symphony, the Symphony of the Kootenays, the Oakville Symphony the Etobicoke Philharmonic, the Beer Sheva Symphoniette (Israel), the Manitoba and Ottawa Chamber Orchestras. He recently made his debuts with the Israel Chamber Orchestra, the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, The Windsor Symphony and the Vancouver Island Symphony and has received invitations to return to all of these orchestras.
Mr. Bolshoy has been invited to participate as a jury member in several international music competitions, including the Guitar-Gems festival in Israel, the Tabula Rasa festival in Russia, and the National Finals of the Canadian Federation of Music Festivals. He has been featured in concerti, recitals, and has given master-classes in prestigious international guitar festivals.
Mr. Bolshoy's students have won awards in competitions, and scholarships to leading Universities and Conservatories, including the top two awards in the Canadian Music Festival competitions, in 2008 and 2009.
Daniel Bolshoy appears on four commercial CD recordings: Resonance, España (Boldan Music). McGillicuddy's Rant (Centaur Classics), and as guest artist on Isabel Bayrakdarian's latest album Tango Notturno (CBC Records) and an upcoming CD of Italian Arias with Tenor Marc Hervieux. Daniel Bolshoy currently records for ATMA records.
Mr. Bolshoy teaches guitar at Concordia University in Montreal and regularly offers masterclasses to guitar societies and educational institutions internationally. He has recently been invited to create and head the guitar department at the newly created Vancouver Symphony School of Music. Daniel Bolshoy continues to perform solo and chamber music recitals in Canada's most prestigious venues, including the Glenn Gould Studio, the Toronto Centre for the Performing Arts, the National Art Centre, and Vancouver's Chan Centre.
