Jeri Brown, accomplished vocal artist, choral director, playwright, and actress, will begin a 'labor of love' community choir in Montreal's downtown. As co-founder of this effort with Christ Church Cathedral, Ms. Brown currently serves as Director of Vocal Studies for the Department of Music at Concordia University.
Accompanist and Assitant Director:
Simon Sloutsker currently serves as Vocal Studies composer-in-residence and jazz piano instructor at Concordia University.
Purpose:
Her award winning film, "Jeri Brown: The Spirit Comes Through," produced for BRAVO & CBC in Nova Scotia, sets the tone for this effort. Jeri hopes to inspire voices in the Montréal community with a mission of 'peace solidarity set to music'.
"My intention is to create choral presentations that cast images and feelings of all participants, in the hope that in imagining peace together we shall move toward achieving it. I believe to achieve peace, we must first be able to imagine it. As poet Denise Levertov wrote, 'Peace as a positive condition of society, not merely as an interim between wars, is something so unknown that it casts no images on the mind's screen.' The choral repertoire will address insightful reflections on issues of globalization and the transformation of conflict. Of immediate interest is assembling a choir that will present concerts on behalf of the support relief events for the people of Haiti. Concurrently, the choir will be available for invitations to perform nationally."
