Christopher Jackson named to Royal Society of Canada
Christopher Jackson of the Department of Music has been elected to the Royal Society of Canada.
Organist,
harpsichordist and conductor, Christopher Jackson's principal field of
interest has been the music of the baroque and high renaissance. A
graduate of the Conservatoire de musique de Montréal, Jackson completed
his musical education in Europe. He is the co-founder and artistic
director of the Studio de musique ancienne de Montréal (SMAM). His
performing career has taken him to France, Spain, Mexico, in addition
to North America. He has recorded for K617 (France), Les Chemins du
Baroque, Analekta and ATMA. In 1999 he received an honorary doctorate
from the University of Sudbury for his musical achievements.
At
the 9th Annual École d'été de chant choral de l'Université de
Sherbrooke in July 2009, Jackson conducted a choir of 50 chorists from
various parts of Quebec in a concert of works by early music composer
Henry Purcell celebrating the 350th anniversary of the composer's birth.
Founded
in 1882, the RSC is Canada's oldest and most prestigious scholarly
society. Election to RSC is the highest honour that can be attained by
scholars, artists and scientists in Canada.
