The development of compositional knowledge and skills for writing concert or other contemporary music are supported by the study of relevant topics in music theory and composition seminars. Whenever possible, compositions are performed in workshops or concert settings. The Department produces some 20 concerts per year in various venues around the city as well as the international Oscar Peterson Concert Hall located on Concordia's Loyola Campus.

Following successful completion of the first-year core courses, students in the Major in Integrative Music Studies may apply for transfer into the Specialization in Music Composition.
