Graduate Certificate in Creative Practices in Technical Production for Live Performance

The Graduate Certificate in Creative Practices in Technical Production for Live Performance - offered jointly by the departments of Music, Theatre and Contemporary Dance - explores the relationship between technical knowledge and the creative process. Its aims are to re-envision the role of technical production in live performance by helping students move beyond their traditional role, encouraging them to become true “Renaissance” technical practitioners. It is a hybrid program, responding to the current needs of the industry, a program where creators and technicians meet, and where their respective needs and interests inter-connect, weaving together to invent new ways of collaborating and creating.

The curriculum focuses on the creative process of production as the work in live performance moves more and more into creation-based practices. Students entering the program will already have a basic knowledge of the pure technical aspect of performance as it relates to the understanding of equipment. This program brings the students into the next level of understanding and allows them to hone specific skills that are linked to their particular interests.

Successful candidates will have a traditional practice based on a well-developed understanding of the theoretical foundation of their specialization. They will be seeking new challenges within their chosen discipline, and wanting to refine new personal boundaries within their practice in order to expand their professional perspectives.
