Private Study Rules

please review these before you register

  • The deadline to register for Fall (/2) courses is September 17, 2012. Late registration is not permitted for private study courses - NO EXCEPTIONS.
  • Your relationship with your private study teacher is crucial and must be mutually acceptable. For this reason it is important that you have a lesson during the first week of classes. If you decide to change teachers, you must see your advisor before September 17 to determine whether the change is feasible and how to proceed.
  • Students may register for a maximum of six credits in Music Private Study in any given academic year, up to a maximum of 18 credits in their degree program.
  • Your teacher will give you a course outline describing the goals for the year, evaluation procedures, policies on make-up lesson and any other pertinent information.
  • An exam will be held in April for students registered in winter-semester private study classes.
  • Faculty bios are listed below.
  • For academic advising regarding private study courses, contact the academic advisor, Prof. Georges Dimitrov at gdimitr@alcor.concordia.ca

How to Register for Private Study

You are allowed a maximum of 18 credits of private study on the instrument you auditioned on. First-year students must meet with an academic advisor before being allowed to register.

STEP 1:

Print out and complete a registration form (leave the course number blank).

STEP 2:

Email the teacher(s) listed below and ask if they will accept you as a private study student. If they agree to, print out the teacher's confirmation email and attach it to the registration form. Bios of all private study faculty are listed below. Alternately many of our instructors have their own websites which you can peruse via Google.

STEP 3:

Attach a copy of your transcript downloaded from the MyConcordia portal.

STEP 4:

Bring all three of these documents to the Music office in EV 2.705 by September 13, 2012. Within 1-3 days office staff will email the course number you have to register for. If you are unable to register at this time, contact the Department Assistant in EV 2.705 or email music@concordia.ca.

STEP 5:

Register for the course on MyConcordia portal.

Private Study Exams

In April, you will have an exam (10 minutes for MUSI courses, 20-25 minutes for MPER 390 courses and 40 minutes for MPER 490 courses. MPER 490 exams are held in the Oscar Peterson Concert Hall.).

Note that private study exams are compulsory for all students registered in full year courses (/3) or (/2 and /4 taken consecutively).

Note that students “should not make commitments for the examination periods until after the final schedule is posted” (Academic Regulation 16.3.10 of Concordia’s Examination Policy). More detailed information will be given to you before the exams.

There is a two person jury for each exam. One jury member is the Private Study teacher and the other is another music teacher, usually a full-time faculty member, chosen for their appropriate knowledge.
